The M1A was Bruce McLaren’s first racing car of his own design. A state-of-the-art, mid-engine design for Group 7 competition, it was a tremendous racing car that lowered the lap record at Goodwood by three full seconds! Strong demand resulted for customer cars, with McLaren delegating Elva to handle production. Named “McLaren-Elva,” only 24 were built.

American racer George Wintersteen took delivery of this example in England in 1965 and raced it in the Guards Trophy race. Next, he contested the Bridgehampton Double 500 in September 1965, qualifying in seventh but not finishing. The car was then sold to Canadian driver John Cordts who actively campaigned it in 1966 and 1967. It remained in Canada until chassis 20/10 was sold in 1979, partially disassembled, to Dr. Ray Stoutenber of North Carolina. In 1982, it was exchanged with Motor Classic Corporation of New York for a 1979 Porsche 911 SC before being restored and sold in 1985 to Peter Kaus of the Rosso Bianco Collection. It remained on display in the museum for many years before being sold to Evert Loumann. The vendor purchased 20/10 at auction in 2006 and has since conducted a full race preparation.

Today, this McLaren-Elva is finished in white with a blue nose and the emblematic number 12, the way it raced at Bridgehampton, powered by a race-prepared 5.7-litre Chevrolet V8 engine by Germany’s Steinke Sportwagenservice. With its four Weber 48 IDA carburettors, the engine produces over 425 hp. Complete with a copy of the dyno test sheet and additional historic documentation, this racing car was entered in the 2009 Goodwood Revival in the Whitsun Trophy Race and performed faultlessly. It remains a formidable contender on the most challenging road courses.

This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in May of 2010 at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco.
